About this Organisation

Glasgow City Archives are housed in the Mitchell Library and include the official records of various local authorities and a large number of private collections. Explore the rich and fascinating history of Glasgow and the west of Scotland, from the 12th century to the 21st.

Our major holdings include:

  • The records of Glasgow City Council and its predecessor authorities, as well as those of Strathclyde Regional Council and some authorities within the former Strathclyde Region
  • Architectural plans
  • Burial and cremation records
  • Business records of all kinds, from large engineering works to small shopkeepers
  • Church records, including the Church of Scotland Glasgow Presbytery and seceding churches, Episcopal Diocese of Glasgow and Galloway, and many other churches
  • Clyde Navigation Trust
  • Family and estate papers covering the west of Scotland
  • Maps and plans
  • Police records
  • Poor relief records
  • School records
  • Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society
  • Shipping and shipbuilding records
