Mapping Memorials to Women project

About this Organisation

The Mapping Memorials to Women website - http://womenofscotland.org.uk/ [1] records memorials to women throughout Scotland. Each memorial is linked to a biography of the woman commemorated.

The website includes memorials such as plaques, street names, buildings, statues etc etc. It includes gravestones only when these have been erected by public subscription or include significant biographical information.

The website is searchable by name, subject (e.g. suffragette, writer, artist) and by location.

There are currently 942 memorials to 700 women (several women have multiple memorials - e.g. Queen Victoria, Queen / Saint Margaret, Jean Armour and Mary Slessor). We envisage recording the 1000th memorial in 2021.

The website is managed jointly by Glasgow Women's Library and Women's History Scotland.
