Orkney Library and Archive

About this Organisation

The Orkney Archive and Orkney Room make up a treasure trove of local history. The Archive holds many thousands of original documents as well as an extensive collection of audio recordings and photographs.

The Orkney Room holds over 6000 books, periodicals and pamphlets relating to Orkney or written by Orcadians, including fiction.

Opened in 1683 as the Publick Bibliotheck of Kirkwall, the Orkney Library has been serving Orkney for over 300 years.

If you want to know more about Orkney or about your Orcadian family history this is the place to start.
