Perth Cathedral

About this Organisation

Perth Cathedral was founded in 1850 by the Scottish Episcopal Church, to serve as the seat of the Bishop of the united dioceses of St. Andrews, Dunkeld and Dunblane - being the first Anglican cathedral to have been built in Britain since the Reformation. Designed by architect William Butterfield (1814-1900) the gothic revival building includes several fine Victorian and Edwardian stained glass windows. The cathedral holds documentary records and pictures relating to the construction of the cathedral as well as former bishops and provosts, together with records relating to other churches in the diocese. Noteworthy among memorials is one commemorating officers and men of the Black Watch killed in the Second Boer War. The cathedral archive includes congregational rolls together with records of births, deaths and marriages, although access to these may be restricted. The story of St. Ninian’s Cathedral is told in ‘A Guide to the Building and Development of St. Ninian’s Cathedral, Perth : 1847-1914’ by Margaret Lye, with accompanying notes and bibliography, available online through the cathedral website.
