Step beyond the house and explore the heritage gardens of Bannockburn House on a guided tour through a landscape shaped by history, community and restoration. After decades of neglect, the house and gardens came into community ownership in 2017 and this tour offers a chance to discover how volunteers are bringing these remarkable grounds back to life.

The volunteer led gardens feature an enclosed kitchen garden supplying fruit and vegetables to local food banks; herb gardens full of common plants used in the 17th century still room for medicinal, culinary and cosmetic needs; our orchard and fruit cages are recently planted but the hundred year old wisteria is stunning in late spring. Come and walk around our labyrinth - our modern aid to mindfulness and quiet relaxation.

Stroll along the Fountain Walk past a cast-iron fountain (built by Steven in 1888), past our veteran lime trees, planted over 300 years ago, and our award-winning apiary. Gaze with awe at 'The Five Sisters' - our fabulous Giant Redwood trees, planted by John McLaren, a Bannockburn lad who began his gardening career here before moving to America where he created the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

You’ll also hear about the estate’s coal mining past, including the recent discovery of a medieval coal mine.

When available, you can buy some of our delicious fresh vegetables, rhubarb and blackcurrants and honey from our produce stall.
