Event Details

Dr Sheilagh Quaile presents a short history of the Paisley shawl industry (ca. 1805-70), including the shawls’ design and fabrication.

In the 19th century, the town of Paisley, Scotland, became famous for manufacturing shawls that imitated patterns from Asian textiles. Indeed, after about 1850, many English speakers associated the town’s name with the iconic, originally Persian motif, the “paisley.”

In this webinar, Dr Sheilagh Quaile presents a short history of the Paisley shawl industry (ca. 1805-70), including the shawls’ design and fabrication. Dr Quaile provides tips on how to identify different types of Paisley shawls and designs from different eras.

This presentation will be of interest to Scottish history enthusiasts and aficionados of fashion, textiles, and design alike.
