It is often thought that the Declaration of Arbroath was largely forgotten after it was written and dispatched to the pope in 1320. More than twenty copies, however, survive from the following two centuries. Almost all of them are found in Latin histories of the Scots. These copies have only recently been studied in detail.

This talk, will explore how the Declaration came to form part of the standard Latin account of Scottish history, and how it was treated—and altered—by scribes. Although it is clear that the Declaration of Arbroath was very far from being forgotten, medieval scribes and readers may have been interested in parts of it that today are normally overlooked. The talk will finish by considering what difference it makes to read the Declaration of Arbroath as part of a general history of the Scots, rather than as a standalone document.

The talk will last approximately 30-40 minutes, with time given at the end for questions.
