Event Details

In 1694, three Scots - Daniel Nicholson, Marion Maxwell and Dr John Nicol - were tried before the High Court in one of the most sensational criminal cases of 17th-century Scotland. From initial charges of adultery and forgery, their trial evolved to reveal a complex and scandalous saga of love, deceit, and attempted murder, all focused on a single victim: Nicholson's wife, Jean Lands. Now, Dr Allan Kennedy (University of Dundee) has teamed up with professional comic artist Gary Welsh and History Scotland magazine to tell this fascinating tale in the form of a comic. In this talk, Allan will explain the significance of this fascinating but little-known moment in Scottish criminal history, while reflecting on the opportunities - and challenges - of presenting Scottish History in comic form.

A Q&A session will take place after the talk. The event is chaired by Professor Chris Murray (University of Dundee).
