An Asian Family in Ediniburgh
About this Resource
This video came from a slide-tape made with Akbal Singh who had a shop in Gorgie back in 1985. The film “An Asian Family in Edinburgh” took two years to make and was funded out of the Producer's pocket. Later the Council used it in schools for multicultural education. It came about because the young people the Producer was working with (also in Gorgie) were repeating National Front lies about immigrants.
About the video:
Akbal Singh's dad came to Scotland from the Punjab and started out as a door-to-door salesman; Akbal was 7 when he came to Edinburgh and this is the story of his family.... "It is 1984. Akbal Singh runs a shop in Edinburgh. He used to work on the buses. He is a proud Sikh; he is from Edinburgh - his wife is from Leeds; they have 2 boys and 2 girls. His father came to Britain from Pakistan because the UK wanted help. This is their story"
