About this Organisation

The Local History Room and Archive of Lanark Library contains a wealth of resources pertaining to not only Lanark Burgh, but also to what used to be the Upperward of Lanarkshire, now Clydesdale. This means that the areas covered are: Biggar, Carluke, Carmichael, Carstairs, Coalburn, Crawford, Crossford, Douglas, Leadhills, Lesmahagow, Lanark, New Lanark, Winston.

The material held here can be used as aid in conducting research on family and local history and it is wide in content and forms: maps of the area (pre-O.S. as well as O.S maps); microfiches and microfilms with O.P.R.s for the Upperward of Lanarkshire; hard-copies of School Board Archives and Parochial Board Archives; Police Archives; and Local Government archives (items from the Royal Burgh of Lanark covering a period of time from 1488 to 1975, County Council of County of Lanark, County of Lanarkshire First, Second and Third District Councils).

We hold hard-copies, microfilms and CD-ROMs of newspapers such as Carluke and Lanark Gazette, Lanark Gazette, Hamilton Advertiser, Lanarkshire Examiner.

There are also photographic collections of events and places in the Upperward of Lanarkshire.
