Perth & Kinross Local and Family History

About this Organisation

About
The Local and Family History Service keeps the historic publications of Perth & Kinross. It is conveniently situated next to Perth & Kinross Archives on the first floor of Perth’s central public library, the AK Bell. Our publications include books, pamphlets, newspapers, postcards and maps. All of our stock is accessible on site.

Books
Our Local History library contains around 30,000 individual items, some of which may be available for loan. The vast majority can be searched for on our catalogue and include:

Parish, village and town histories;
Biographies;
Old Post Office Directories (mainly for Perth);
Statistical Accounts of Scotland;
Population statistics;
Annual reports of local organisations;
Programmes of concerts, theatre and sporting events;
A collection of titles by authors who were born or who lived in the area; novels set in Perthshire and Kinross-shire, and books printed or published locally;
A collection of historical images, chiefly comprising Edwardian postcards of Perth and Kinross and the W.H. Findlay Collection of photographs. The latter covers mainly the buildings of Perth from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Family History Resources
Ancestry institution is available for free on our public PCs and via our WiFi.
We have a recently enlarged collection of family history publications. These include books of monumental inscriptions (chiefly gravestones) covering not only the old burial grounds of Perthshire and Kinross-shire, but also those of Fife, Angus, Aberdeenshire and some other counties.
