Come and see a reproduction of the first ever panorama showing Edinburgh from Calton Hill in the 18th century.

Robert Barker was a successful Irish painter. While taking a walk on Calton Hill in Edinburgh he was struck with the idea of capturing the breathtaking view of Scotland’s capital in its full splendour. He wondered if it was possible to present the whole view in one picture.

With the help of his young son, Henry, Barker created and displayed the first panorama of Edinburgh in the city in 1788.

Visit us to find out more about the history of Barker’s invention and take in the view of 18th century Edinburgh.

With thanks to the University of Edinburgh and Jenny Bruce.
