Event Details

A presentation by Dr Peter Hewitt entitled “Galloway Folklore” will be the topic of our meeting on November 10th at 7.30pm.

This talk will explore the folklore and legends of Galloway using unpublished documents from the Stewartry Museum as well as a variety of ‘popular antiquities’ (i.e., artefacts such as a witch stone from Anwoth, see image). The talk will consider Gallovidian contributions to the general corpus of national lore (such as John Copland’s artwork, William Nicholson’s poetry and Robert Malcolmson’s collecting) and – in celebration of the homecoming of the Galloway Hoard – Peter will also explore the folklore of buried treasure and treasure hunting in the region.

Dr. Peter Hewitt is Museums Officer for Collections in D&G West, and founder of the Folklore Museums Network.
